Winter Weather’s Effect on the Restaurant Industry

If you’re in the Northern or Central portions of the United States, it’s no surprise that colder months can have a negative impact on restaurant business. During the winter, potential customers may not be motivated to drive to a restaurant for a meal – especially once snow, ice or freezing temperatures come into play. Because of fewer customers, owners are left with half-empty restaurants and a decline in sales.

While most have come to expect this situation, there are steps that restaurant owners may take to increase the number of customers coming into their business during a slow season. Providing customers with a delivery option may give the restaurant more consistent business throughout the rough months. Since customers would have the ability to order food by phone or online and have it delivered straight to their home, they may continue patronizing their favorite restaurant. We shared information that 2016 may be a banner year for new delivery practices just last month.

Another solution could be that eateries start offering specials during the slower winter months such as a free dessert or appetizer, a small percentage off the bill, or two-for-the-price-of-one meals. While this might seem counterproductive, running these specials may improve the attractiveness of your restaurant to those who are budget-pinching after the busy holiday season. More people coming into the restaurant, more money in the cash registers!

The weather isn’t the only thing that might be holding customers back from eating outside the home during these months. Dropping temperatures can mean that heating costs at home are skyrocketing. Patrons may be hesitant to spend their dollars following the holidays taking into consideration what it takes for them to pay off all those holiday bills.

While we here at JI Bases understand that not every restaurant is impacted by slower business during the winter months, we know that the establishments that use our products are satisfied with the quality and workmanship of their table bases. Made from durable and strong cast iron, their table bases can withstand the busiest of seasons as well as the slowest. No worries about wobbly tables now, or later.
