High Tech Trends in the Restaurant Industry
It seems like every day there is some new high tech trend that comes out, whether it be a new phone, TV or computer. There are many technological advances many different industries and the restaurant industry is very much involved. Even at JI Bases where we use methods of casting that may not seem very technologically advanced – we used technology to develop our recycled cardboard assembly platform that helps assemble our bases in under a minute. JI Bases works to use technology to ensure we deliver and manufacture the best table bases around.
One of the biggest and most successful trends in restaurants is computerized ordering and payment. Instead of placing your order with a waiter, some chains now have kiosks and tabletop ordering, where you place the order yourself. We have already heard of restaurants in China that are using robots as servers and cooks, but are not surprised to hear that the robots cost much more than traditional staff. While robots may ultimately help a restaurant run more efficiently by letting the staff focus on other duties it is computerized ordering that is driving some of the technological advances in the restaurant industry.
Some interesting examples of computerized ordering include United Airlines, which has started to incorporate computerized ordering in their terminal at Newark International Airport. Food is ordered and paid for through an iPad at the counter or table. The thought behind this is to improve efficiency in a situation where being on time is incredibly important. Another big factor in implementing this is to ensure that food is ordered correctly and cut down on wasted food from an incorrect order.
It’s also no surprise that McDonald’s is getting in on technological advances like computerized ordering. In Australia they have rolled out a kiosk based ordering system called “Create Your Taste” which they are also currently testing in the US. This system will let the customer design their burger by choosing the type of toppings, bun and sauces. While this very cool technological advance could enhance the customer experience, the debate which is the same surrounding all computerized ordering is whether or not this will ultimately eliminate jobs for humans.
While all these technological advances are very cool, here at JI Bases we are just going to stick with what we know – high quality products and exceptional customer service.
