Not every customer pays attention to the shape, color, texture, etc. of a restaurant table base. Generally, people only pay attention to the table base if it's wobbly, or the table itself is leaning. Since 1958, about the time when restaurants were starting to be built on every corner and more people were looking at options to eat outside the home, Frank Jacobs took a look at what was available to the restaurant owners.  He found that "clunky" or "chunky" pieces of iron were being used to support table tops.  They were clumsy to move (not to mention heavy) and really didn't have an aesthetic appearance.  

So he set out to design something that was more in line with every day use.  He came up with the "X" base, or the "4-pronged" pedestal base that his company became known for.  He went "on-the-road" to sell at first, and became quite well established in the hospitality and restaurant industry.

One of the things that made Frank's design more popular, was the base was more sleak; it moved easily, and above all, was stronger and sturdier overall.  He found that welded, stamped steel top plates just couldn't hold up as long as solid cast iron. And, so he made adjustments until he had the perfect design.  

Why the Design Matters

What Frank found was that the 4-pronged design allowed the following to happen: 

• Customers could now "straddle" the base plate, rather than putting their feet on top of it.
• The stamped steel parts could leave unsightly rust rings on the floor.
• Chairs were now able to be pushed up tight against the table top, allowing for extra room creating walkways or passages through the restaurant.
• The adjustable glides that work consistently for every style of base could be cleaned using mops that wouldn't get tangled leaving unsightly strings on the floor; or, leave oily residue behind on the floor.

As the years go on, Frank's company keep perfecting this style of restaurant pedestal base, and his son, Michael, is continuing the legacy with JI Bases.  JI Bases is the result of many years 

The innovation hasn't stopped either.
