Let's Talk Under the Table!

Why does JI Bases Use Cast Iron

Why use Cast Iron?

Both cast iron and stamped steel are both common materials used in manufacturing table bases, but they differ in their properties. And, frankly, JI Bases feels that cast iron is the preferred material and our customers agree. Here's a brief look at why we think so.

There are many good reasons why cast iron has been a preferred table base material for so long. Cast iron has proven to be an incredibly durable, affordable, and environmentally friendly material. It's well known that cast iron is generally stronger and more durable than stamped steel which makes it the perfect choice for products that rely on its strength and stability.

On the other hand, stamped steel is a type of metal that is formed by pressing or stamping sheets of steel into the desired shape using a press machine or a die which makes the top plates made from stamped steel generally thinner and more flexible. JI Bases does use a stamped steel top plate on on our ADA columns and fixed bases as you cannot weld cast iron to steel columns; however, we use heavier steel plate than some other manufacturers. In turn, ensuring that the top plate doesn’t bend nearly as easily.

Cast Iron: The Durability

Cast iron table bases can last for a very long time. The long-wearing nature of cast iron table bases makes them a perfect fit for restaurants, bars, and other hospitality venues that require durable table bases that can withstand a significant amount of wear and tear. Restaurants, bars, and other venues rely on durable tables, bases, and other pieces of furniture that have to be constantly moved.

JI Bases’ Cast Iron Table Bases Can Be Paired With Most Table Tops

The stability and durability of cast iron table bases make them a perfect match for most tabletops. Cast iron won’t bend or flex with use. The nature of stamped steel to be lighter allows for some bend or warp to occur over time. Thus, leaving the top to lean, perhaps even wobble if welds don’t hold up to the day-to-day wear and tear.

Do not take any chances when it comes to pairing table tops and table bases; you will want to ensure that you have a perfect fit. JI Bases has several sizes and styles to choose from. If you're not sure what base you're going to need, a quick phone call can put your mind at ease. With over 60 years in the table bases, our staff is knowledgeable and even have a "size guide" available to help.

Cast Iron Table Bases Are Often "Overlooked"

Cast iron has a classic and timeless look that can add a touch of elegance and sophistication to your table design.

  • They can be timeless. In some restaurants they're used continuously - allowing for replacement of tops; but the bases don't have to be replaced because they're solid.
  • They're a "commodity". A restaurant has to have them - unless of course, you want your customers eating off the floor. And, so it's often a place where some think they can cut costs; but to ensure your solid foundation, isn't it worth the extra dollar or two to have a higher quality product and to have the backing of the manufacture with a lifetime guarantee and over 60 years of experience?

Over the past 60+ years, JI Bases has been helping restaurant tables stand solidly. We know what it takes to create the ideal setup for a restaurant, and that is why we are dedicated to helping you find the right table bases that suit your needs.
