Demographics are rapidly changing the look of our future markets.
Low birth rates combined with incredible advances in science and medical care show that by 2030 Adults 65 and over will outnumber children 18 and younger. And, by 2060 one in four of Americans will be 65 or over, the number of 85+ will triple, and the country will add a half-million Centenarians!
This majority of older adults are healthy, more vigorous than their predecessors, and are also "tech savvy." They will have more disposable income, inclined to travel, and are looking forward to their ability to get out and enjoy their everyday lives. This bodes well for the markets we serve. (ie "where food is served outside the home--be it restaurants, hotels, hospitals, nursing homes, airports, plant cafeterias, or offices.")
In order to take advantage of this growing, profitable market we need to address what older adults are looking for. With the assumptions made above, this new-found aged American will be spending more of their time eating outside of their home environment. They prefer the familiar and comfortable. Obviously, the food will need to be good, and the establishment clean (especially the rest rooms).
Soft, warm colors along with firm-backed chairs and solid tables that will bear the additional weight bearing of getting up and down will be the new norm. Aisles will need to be wide and accommodating for assistive devices, like walkers, canes, and wheel chairs.
